Fear isn’t always a bad thing. In Buddhism and psychology, you will come across the concepts of healthy and unhealthy fear. Generally, fears are unhealthy if they are triggered by something that doesn’t actually pose a threat (a moth, for example) or if they are triggered by something unavoidable (death, for example). These unhealthy fears prejudice our decision making in potentially harmful ways. By contrast, healthy fears are triggered by real dangers (lung cancer, for example) – if someone quits smoking due to a fear of developing cancer, that is a logical, constructive response to something they have some power over.
